Sistering is an organization that offers practical and emotional support to women through programs which enable them to take greater control over their lives. Guided by the principles of anti-racism and anti-oppression, Sistering works to change social conditions, which endanger women’s welfare.
Programs and Services
Sistering provides homeless, low-income and marginalized women with a place to go each day, breakfast and lunch, housing and case support, social recreation, employment and income support. Many women come to Sistering struggling with the impacts of trauma and violence as well as addictions and mental health issues. Others live in isolation created by reduced mobility and language barriers. From blood pressure clinics to counselling to harm reduction, Sistering’s programs and services offers ways to improve one’s health and well-being and provide a sense of community.
Sistering’s employment and income support programs offer women the opportunity to earn supplementary income, prepare for employment, acquire workplace and business skills and establish links with employers.
Sistering offers all programs and services in English, Spanish and Mandarin. In addition, Sistering staff speak Farsi, Gujarati, Hindi, Italian, Patois, Portuguese, Russian and Urdu.
Social Enterprise At Sistering
Sistering has two social enterprises which offer women the opportunity to earn income, build a sense of accomplishment and become part of a community of like minded individuals. Spun is a micro business incubator whereby women learn a variety of textile skills and focus on the creation of sewn, knit, woven and felted household and wearable items for sale. Inspirations Studio is a pottery studio where members make pottery for sale.
